En la noche de San Juan de 1874 en el estado de Count en Suecia, la joven noble Julia, que intenta escapar de una existencia llena de costumbres sociales y pasar un buen rato, decide ir a bailar a la fiesta de los sirvientes, donde seduce a un lacayo llamado Juan. Esa noche Juan y Julia consuman su amor, algo que resulta dramático para Julia, quien ve mancillada su posición social, al haberse relacionado con un criado. Juan la convence diciéndole que la única manera de escapar de su apuro es el suicidio. La acción toma lugar en la cocina del señorío del padre de Julia; donde la novia de Juan, una sirvienta llamada Christina, cocina y a veces duerme mientras Juan y la señorita Julia hablan. La lucha de clases y el poder están muy presentes en la obra. Julia ejerce poder sobre Juan, porque es de una clase social más alta, sin embargo, Juan tiene el poder sobre esta, porque es un hombre. El conde, el padre de la señorita Julia (un personaje que no aparece en escena), ejerce el poder sobre ambos personajes porque es un hombre noble, el patrón de Juan y el padre de la señorita Julia.

God Help the Girl
God Help The Girl is a musical feature film, written and directed by Stuart Murdoch, lead singer of the group Belle and Sebastian. It was produced by Barry Mendel and stars Emily Browning, Olly Alexander and Hannah Murray. Stuart aspired to tell the story of “a better summer, or at least a summer when something happened. It happened to a boy and a girl and a girl in a city roughly the same size and population of Glasgow. Perhaps the canals were a bit grimier, the high-rise buildings taller, the streets emptier when you needed them to be, and the beat clubs busier than the ones around here. But on the whole the city was this one.” According to Barry Mendel, “It’s a simple story – about the brief moment after you’ve realised what you want to do with your life, before your dream settles into becoming your job, when you’re filled with enthusiasm, meeting like-minded friends and the possibilities are endless.” The film was shot, edited, scored and mixed in Glasgow over the course of 2012-2013 and will be released in cinemas around the world in 2014

Netflix executives have started to talk a lot about using their data to help pick which actors and plot lines will appeal most to its audience. What do you make of this mix of art and computer science? My only fear, honestly, is that I don’t think you can engineer the creative side and predict what people will love, based on what they’ve watched before. There is magic when people find a show and claim it as their own. They were really good about letting us find the right people for the characters. They expressed their preference for certain people and had opinions about it. At the end, I have to say they were really respectful. They’re new to this, and I think it makes them really smart.
